Announcement regarding Digital Grades & Diplomas - Available from November 2020 onwards

Trinity College London is incredibly excited to announce the launch of its brand-new Digital Grades and Diplomas which, from November 2020, will provide an online platform for the assessment of music and drama grade and diploma exams. We are delighted to be able to make digital music and drama exams available to teachers and candidates in all our markets, meaning that whatever the challenges the rest of this year brings, candidates will be able to continue taking their exams digitally.
From November, the Digital Grades and Diploma exams platform will allow candidates to submit video recordings of their work. Candidates will be required to upload their work as one continuous video performance, which will be assessed by one of Trinity’s Examiners.
In Music Graded Exams, candidates will be required to upload a performance of their pieces and technical work; the assessment of the supporting tests or session skills will not be part of the submission. Instead, examiners will be applying an additional set of performance criteria that assesses the key musical skills underpinning the supporting tests requirements within the context of the whole recital. In Music Performance Diplomas, the exam requirements are unchanged.
The feedback we have received during recent months has been invaluable to the development of these qualification, and we have been working hard on a number of improvements to our upload system to provide teachers and candidates with a satisfying, seamless exam experience.

The new Piano Syllabus 2021-2023 is here!
The new repertoire includes up to 35 pieces per grade, and includes a wide range of styles to allow teachers and students to find the music they want to play. The repertoire also features many compositions by young composers from around the world, as well as a selection of popular pieces from previous syllabuses. The new syllabus can be used in exams from 1 January 2021 onward.
The exam structure and marking scheme for piano remain the same, as well as the requirements for scales and arpeggios for each grade.
The Piano 2018-2020 syllabus can still be used until the end of 2021.

New Performance Diplomas Syllabus from 2019
The new syllabus continues to feature the majority of the pieces currently in the 2009-2018 syllabus*, which means candidates can continue to prepare for their examination whichever date they choose.
The 2009-2018 syllabus will be extended until 31 July 2019. The new, 'from 2019', syllabus will be used from 1 August 2019 onwards.
You can choose your repertoire from our repertoire lists, select your own pieces or have a mix of the two. If there’s no repertoire list for your chosen instrument, you can propose an ‘own choice’ programme. Any programme including own choice items, or single movements from items listed complete in the repertoire lists, must be approved by Trinity before you can enter for the exam.
If your programme is all taken from the repertoire lists then you won’t need approval.
The syllabus gives advice on creating a recital programme. You can’t choose any ‘own choice’ pieces set for our Grade or Certificate exams, or from a lower level diploma.
Please note that there will be no overlap between syllabuses, so all exams from 1 August 2019 onwards will follow the 'from 2019' syllabus.More details can be found here

Updated Aural Tests and Improvisation requirements for 2017 onwards

Specifications for aural tests and improvisation tests are changing for all instruments. The changes will apply to all exams taken from 1 January 2017 onwards.
Updated aural specifications are now available on our website and the tests are supported by two new books of examples.
While the format of the current tests has been retained, including the use of a single piece of music for all questions, a number of revisions have been made at all levels resulting in a clearer incremental progression of each topic through the grades.
One of the principal aims in revising the improvisation requirements has been to make the tests more musically authentic. Three options will be available: an improvisation over a notated piano part played by the examiner, an unaccompanied improvisation based on a short melodic fragment and an unaccompanied improvisation in response to a chord sequence.
Updated specifications are now available on our website, in addition to example stimuli for all grades.
There is no overlap for supporting tests, so the current aural and improvisation tests cannot be offered after 31 December 2016. Sight reading and musical knowledge tests remain unchanged. Please visit the supporting tests page on the Trinity website for full details.
